Legal Marijuana and its Effects on Beer Sales

The state of California ranks first in the nation with the most craft breweries. According to the Brewers Association, there are 1.9 breweries per capita. The economic impact in the state also ranked first in the nation with a total of $ 6.9 billion. Surprisingly, the impact per capita estimated to be $251.89, ranking 23rd in the nation. California ranks 2nd in production with 3.8 million barrels of craft beer produced per year.

Conversely, Missouri ranks 51st nationwide with eight craft breweries and only 0.4 breweries per capita amongst adults 21 years old and over. The economic impact ranks 45th in the nation with $223 million and $103.74 per capita. The state of Missouri ranks 44th in production with only 30,790 barrels of craft beer produced per year.

At a national level, the craft brewing industry supplied the United States’ economy with $ 55.7 billion and more than 424,000 jobs. According to the Beer Association, there are predictions that the legalization of marijuana in the state decreased the consumption of beer by 6.4 percent. Interestingly, Colorado placed first in output with a total of $709.39 per capita countering the findings by Cowen and Company.
